Serenata

A devised workshop by Harry Gibson for Oxford Theatre Guild
Saturday 11 May, 18 May & 25 May.
Temple Cowley United Reformed Church, Oxford Road Cowley, OX4 2ES
www.urctemplecowley.org.uk

Parking on the URC forecourt or on the other side of Oxford Road in Cedar Court, and if available, in the car park of Temple Cowley Library and Swimming Pool, on Temple Road.

Saturday 11 May 1.45 for 2pm start, until 5pm

This first workshop will be an open one for all (you must come to this one if you want to take part in the project). This will be to gauge the numbers of people interested and the potential for the piece as a whole. At the first workshops all participants are expected to contribute an ambition for what they would like to do on a stage – and this can take any form! Examples Harry has given include ‘to speak a poem by TS Eliot’, ‘to use music by Joy Division,’ ‘to burst out of a cake.’ From your ideas a theme will emerge.

Saturday 18 May 1.45 for 2pm start, until 5pm

Saturday 25 May 1.45 for 2pm start, until 5pm

At these two further workshops we will then continue to devise the piece. You may be asked to bring some words and some music (not your own unless you can/want to) to these. As the workshops progress Harry will present progressive outlines of the show.

Anyone taking part in the workshops will be asked to join the Guild, if not already a member.
This costs £10 per annum (£5 for concessions). Refreshments will be available. Guild member Polly Mountain will be at each workshop as will someone from the Guild committee.

Performance:
The working title of this project is Serenata – an evening entertainment. The three workshops may well result in a piece which can then be performed and the potential for this will be judged after the final workshop. The aim is to make an evening entertainment, not a conventional conversational play or a review show, but something in which each performer does something outstandingly fine, and everyone – watching or on stage – enjoys themselves.

About the Director:
Harry Gibson began acting with the (City of) Oxford Theatre Guild in 1968 (our name change to just OTG came later). He then became a professional stage actor, director and playwright.
He adapted and directed – from the West End to Off-Broadway – the multi-award-winning stage version of Irvine Welsh’s novel Trainspotting. He has done seven devised shows for schoolboys, drama students and professionals, drawing on the performers’ ideas, and using text, mime and dance.

Next steps :
If you want to come along on Saturday 11 May then let Harry know by text or phone on 07775 711364 or 01865 716998

Harry is happy to discuss the project on the telephone.
